Compare Ephesians 4:17-32 with Colossians 3:1-17. How does Paul advocate for believers to live in a way that encourages the unity of the church?

“The accession of members who have not been renewed in heart and reformed in life is a source of weakness to the church. This fact is often ignored. Some ministers and churches are so desirous of securing an increase of numbers that they do not bear faithful testimony against unchristian habits and practices. Those who accept the truth are not taught that they cannot safely be worldlings in conduct while they are Christians in name. Heretofore they were Satan's subjects; henceforth they are to be subjects of Christ. The life must testify to the change of leaders. Public opinion favors a profession of Christianity. Little self-denial or self-sacrifice is required in order to put on a form of godliness and to have one's name enrolled upon the church book. Hence many join the church without first becoming united to Christ. In this Satan triumphs. Such converts are his most efficient agents. They serve as decoys to other souls. They are false lights, luring the unwary to perdition. It is in vain that men seek to make the Christian's path broad and pleasant for worldlings. God has not smoothed or widened the rugged, narrow way. If we would enter into life, we must follow the same path which Jesus and His disciples trod—the path of humility, self-denial, and sacrifice. 5T 172.2

“Ministers should see that their own hearts are sanctified through the truth, and then labor to secure these results for their converts. It is pure religion that ministers and people need. Those who put away iniquity from their hearts and stretch out their hands in earnest supplication unto God will have that help which God alone can give them. A ransom has been paid for the souls of men, that they may have an opportunity to escape from the thralldom of sin and obtain pardon, purity, and heaven.” 5T 172.3

A Dramatic Change of Clothing
극적인 옷의 변화
In retelling the story of the conversion of his audience, what essential main point is Paul getting across to them? Eph. 4:20-24

Isa. 60:1 – “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.”

Who can truthfully say that our light is not come? that our message is not timely Truth? None who are in contact with It, I am sure. Inspiration is, therefore, inviting God’s people, the Denomination, along with us, to arise and shine. The word “shine” is what we must study next that we may know what is required of us.

A black, dirty object never reflects, it consumes all the light to itself. The moon shines because its surface is of white substance. If it were made of black substance it could not reflect any light whatever. The same is true with spiritual light: If we are eager to shine, we must now arise and clean up, put away our black, filthy garments – take an active part in this revival and reformation under the supervision of the Holy Spirit. Stupidity, fanaticism, and indifference must be abandoned and Divine thinking put in action, so commands the Lord:

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts. For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: so shall My word be that goeth forth out of My mouth: it shall not return unto Me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” Isa. 55:7-11.

We must clean up our thoughts, our ways, our bodies, our clothes, our homes inside and out. Cleanliness is Godliness; God’s government is law and order, peace and righteousness, joy and contentment. Thus we need to be polished by the Spirit of God, be altogether Christians if we are to “shine,” if we are ever to reflect the Word of God to those who sit in darkness. If you have taken care of all the things the message teaches, then as your supreme duty and Divine privilege, take what Inspiration says: “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, for the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.” Those who are now sitting down as dark objects, consuming light to themselves, should now embrace the opportunity and welcome the privilege. Today is your opportunity.

Which of Paul’s words of counsel with regard to the use of speech among believers is most important to you just now? Why? Eph. 4:25-29

“In seeking to correct or reform others we should be careful of our words. They will be a savor of life unto life or of death unto death. In giving reproof or counsel, many indulge in sharp, severe speech, words not adapted to heal the wounded soul. By these ill-advised expressions the spirit is chafed, and often the erring ones are stirred to rebellion. All who would advocate the principles of truth need to receive the heavenly oil of love. Under all circumstances reproof should be spoken in love. Then our words will reform but not exasperate. Christ by His Holy Spirit will supply the force and the power. This is His work. COL 337.1

“Not one word is to be spoken unadvisedly. No evil speaking, no frivolous talk, no fretful repining or impure suggestion, will escape the lips of him who is following Christ. The apostle Paul, writing by the Holy Spirit, says, “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth.” Ephesians 4:29. A corrupt communication does not mean only words that are vile. It means any expression contrary to holy principles and pure and undefiled religion. It includes impure hints and covert insinuations of evil. Unless instantly resisted, these lead to great sin. COL 337.2

“Upon every family, upon every individual Christian, is laid the duty of barring the way against corrupt speech. When in the company of those who indulge in foolish talk, it is our duty to change the subject of conversation if possible. The Holy Spirit in the Believer’s Life

In discussing sins of speech within the Christian community, what exhortation does Paul share about the presence of the Holy Spirit with believers? Eph. 4:30

What is the seal of God upon the foreheads of the 144,000 (Rev. 7:3)? Is it the Sabbath seal or something else?

Being sealed in Christ "with that Holy Spirit of promise," after having "heard the word of truth" (Eph. 1:13; 4:30), the saints are consequently sealed by Present Truth--the truth preached in their own day.

"The seal of the living God," the Truth, by which the 144,000 are sealed (Rev. 7:2), is a special seal, being the same as "the mark" of Ezekiel 9. (See Testimonies to Ministers, p. 445; Testimonies, Vol. 3, p. 267; Testimonies, Vol. 5, p. 211). It demands one's sighing and crying over the abominations which defile him and which desecrate both the Sabbath and the house of God, especially against selling literature and raising goals during Sabbath services. As the saints have this seal or mark on their foreheads, the angels will pass over them, not slay them. It is equivalent to the blood on the door post on the night of the Passover in Egypt. The angel is to place a mark upon the foreheads of all who by sighing over their own sins, and over the sins in the house of God, show fidelity to the Truth. Then the destroying angels will follow, to slay utterly both old and young who have failed to receive the seal. (See Testimonies, Vol. 5, p. 505.)

So, the former seal enables the receiver to rise from the dead in the resurrection of the just, while the latter seal enables the sighing-crying one to escape death and forever to live for God.
따라서 전자의 인을 받으면 의인의 부활을 통해 죽음에서 부활할 수 있고, 후자의 인을 받으면 한숨 쉬며 우는 사람이 죽음을 피하고 영원히 하나님을 위해 살 수 있습니다.

How can believers attain and maintain unity among themselves?
신자들은 어떻게 서로 일치를 이루고 유지할 수 있습니까?
To defeat the Enemy and maintain unity and harmony, let every believer cease finding fault with his brethren; watch his own steps and not theirs; realize that they have the same opportunity as does he to know the difference between right and wrong; bear his own and not their responsibility; esteem them better than himself; and do and say nothing he would not like them to do or say to him.
원수를 물리치고 단결과 조화를 유지하려면, 모든 신자는 형제들에게서 잘못을 찾는 것을 멈추고, 그들의 발걸음이 아니라 자신의 발걸음을 조심하고, 옳고 그름의 차이를 알 수 있는 기회가 자신과 똑같이 형제들에게도 있다는 것을 깨닫고, 자신의 책임을 지고 그들의 책임을 지지 말고, 그들을 자신보다 더 존중하며, 그들이 자신에게 하지 않기를 바라는 행동이나 말을 하지 말아야 한다.
Let each realize, as did Paul, that charitableness--forbearance through love--is the most indispensable, urgent, and lofty of all attainments:

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; rejoiceth not in iniquity but rejoiceth in the truth; beareth all things believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

Do this, Brethren, and the Devil will flee and your troubles after him.

Remember that "Satan lives, and is active, and every day we need to cry earnestly to God for help and strength to resist him. As long as Satan reigns we shall have self to subdue, besetments to overcome! and there is no stopping-place, there is no point to which we can come and say we have fully attained.

If Christians never accuse one another, never communicate one another's mistakes, shortcomings, failures, and troubles, they will find themselves so united that nothing can break their common Christian bond. But such a spirit of oneness can be maintained only by a people who keep a tireless vigil over themselves, always to see eye to eye and to speak the same things by forsaking their own ways and thoughts in exchange for the Lord's.
그리스도인들이 서로를 비난하지 않고, 서로의 실수, 결점, 실패, 문제를 말하지 않는다면, 그 어떤 것도 그리스도인의 공통된 유대를 깨뜨릴 수 없을 정도로 하나가 될 것입니다. 그러나 그러한 하나됨의 정신은 주님의 방식과 생각을 대신하여 자신의 방식과 생각을 버림으로써 항상 눈을 맞추고 같은 말을 하기 위해 지칠 줄 모르고 자신을 경계하는 사람들에 의해서만 유지될 수 있습니다.

It is well to remember too, that our tongues are given to us for the purpose of speaking God’s Truth and His praise, and our energies to proclaim His Truth and to bless His people. Let us be talking of and working for these heaven born principles. If you accidently happen to see or to hear that someone is doing something that according to your best judgment is not proper for a Christian to do, and if you think you can help him, then do not make of yourself a tale-bearer by telling it to anyone but rather plead with the guilty one.
우리의 혀는 하나님의 진리와 그분의 찬양을 말하기 위해, 그리고 그분의 진리를 선포하고 그분의 백성을 축복하기 위해 우리에게 주어진 것임을 기억하는 것도 좋습니다. 하늘에서 태어난 이러한 원칙에 대해 이야기하고 그것을 위해 일합시다. 여러분이 최선의 판단에 따라 그리스도인으로서 적절하지 않은 일을 하는 사람을 우연히 보거나 들었을 때, 그리고 여러분이 그를 도울 수 있다고 생각한다면, 그 사실을 아무에게도 말함으로써 자신을 이야기꾼으로 만들지 말고 오히려 죄가 있는 사람에게 간청하십시오.
Do not make yourself a criterion for any either, and do not force your ideas on anyone but on yourselves. It is no one’s duty to police another. Understand that no one is in debt to bring his life to anyone’s standards and maximums. Hear what Inspiration says: “Who are thou that judgest another man’s servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand” (Rom. 14:4) but since you are not able to, then why try!

Do not make enemies by your tongues. Make friends. And do not have your feelings on your finger tips. If you do, you yourself will feel the loss of friends, of social joy, and of the opportunity and privilege to win souls to Christ. Do not end the day with no credit to be recorded on your page of Heaven’s ledger. Do not misinterpret other peoples’ motives either. Try to see and interpret everything in the right way, give everyone a chance. See the good in everyone and close your eyes to all evil.

Let your conversation be on the subject of promoting God’s Truth for the day. It will keep you busy talking of something profitable and commendable. Think and study, and when you talk religion, by all means do not become a bore. Go on with your talk only as far as your listeners follow you – “Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.” Matt. 7:6.
그날의 대화 주제는 하느님의 진리를 홍보하는 것이 되도록 하세요. 유익하고 칭찬할 만한 이야기를 하느라 바쁘게 지낼 것입니다. 생각하고 공부하며 종교에 대해 이야기할 때는 지루해지지 않도록 하세요. "거룩한 것을 개에게 주지 말며 너희 진주를 돼지 앞에 던지지 말라 그들이 발 아래서 짓밟고 돌이켜 너희에게 돌이킬까 두려워하느니라"는 말씀처럼 청중이 따라오는 한도 내에서만 이야기를 이어가세요. 마 7:6.
Tongues are hard to control, and ears always anxious to hear. It will therefore be better if you do less visiting. Much visiting is only a waste of time and a temptation to discuss the motes in the eyes of others and to overlook the beam that is in your own eye.
혀는 통제하기 어렵고 귀는 항상 듣고 싶어 합니다. 그러므로 방문을 적게 하는 것이 더 좋을 것입니다. 많은 방문은 시간 낭비일 뿐이며, 남의 눈에 있는 티끌을 논하고 자기 눈에 있는 들보는 간과하려는 유혹일 뿐이다.
Whenever you are by yourself you can get something done. You can then either work or study. But when you get together with others, the chances are that you get nothing done but harm to yourself and to others. Now is the time to study and to learn the Truth for this time, to find out how to give a study and how to answer questions in a simple way, without having to go into a lot of history or biography. And if you are determined to walk with God daily and to study His will concerning your own duties, not the duties of others, you will find plenty to keep you busy and out of mischief.
혼자 있을 때는 언제든 무언가를 해낼 수 있습니다. 일을 하거나 공부를 할 수도 있습니다. 그러나 다른 사람들과 함께 모이면 자신과 다른 사람들에게 해를 끼칠 뿐 아무것도 이루지 못할 가능성이 있습니다. 지금은 많은 역사나 전기를 들먹이지 않고도 간단한 방법으로 공부하는 방법과 질문에 답하는 방법을 찾기 위해 공부하고이 시간에 대한 진리를 배울 때입니다. 그리고 매일 하느님과 동행하기로 결심하고 그분의 뜻을 연구하기로 결심했다면 다른 사람의 의무가 아니라 자신의 의무에 관해 연구하기로 결심한다면, 여러분은 바쁘게 지내고 장난에서 벗어날 수 있는 많은 것을 발견할 것입니다.
Remember, too, that you are candidates for the first fruits, to be either one with, or one of the 144,000, that you are to be without guile in your mouths (Rev. 14:5).

Measure your words by the golden rule. If you will do to others what you would have them to do to you, you will have less trouble, greater joy in life, many friends all around you, and fair sheaves for the Heavenly Garner.
